This is a national level museum with 18 galleries each showcasing exhibits related to the Freedom movement, Gandhi and Nehru, Bengal school of Art work, Roerich paintings amongst various other collections. The museum started as a small exhibition place in 1931. In 1947, Prime minister Nehru laid the foundation of the present museum building in Chandrasekhar Azad park, the museum was inaugarated in 1952.
This is a historic house which belonged to the Nehru-Gandhi family. The house was built was Moti Lal Nehru and was the main residence of Nehrus. It was turned into a museum, after Indira Gandhi donated the house to the Indian Government in 1970. Now it is a memorial of Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru and the Indian freedom movement. The museum contains memorabilia of Nehru-Gandhi family and many important memories of Indian struggle for Independence. There is a planetarium as well in this house. The museum is opened from 9:30 AM to 5 PM daily and closed on Monday.
